About the Minnesota hockey team:

>top academic student (3.41 grade-point average)

>all-time high grade-point average of 2.84

>dummy who posted no better than a 2.27

Out of context these all mean nothing. What is the average grade-point of
undergraduate students at Minnesota? For all I know 2.84 could be good,
bad or about what would be expected.

Of course the same thing goes for hockey numbers. A freshman who scored X
points a game in the Green Ice League may or may not be a good recruit.
Was he/she a high scorer for that league? How highly rated were they in
that league? Is he/she big enough and/or fast enough to play at a higher
level? Have players with similar numbers from that league generally make a
successful transition to college play? Etc.

Numbers are fine but the absolute value tells you little.
