The Tigers held their 1997-98 banquet last night at the Forrestal
Hotel/Conference Center in Princeton. Earning team awards were:

Hobey Baker Award (Rookie of the Year): Chris Corrinet '01
Vaughan Cup (Perseverance and Dedication): Chris Patrick '98
Class of '41 Award (Championship Spirit): The entire senior class,
which includes Patrick, Matt Brush, Casson Masters, Robbie Sinclair,
Erasmo Saltarelli and Joey Pelle
Blackwell Trophy (MVP): Jeff Halpern '99

WTTM Three-Star Award: Steve Shirreffs '99

The WTTM award was presented by Hockey-L's own Jason Patton.

The seniors recognized their own teammates with some gag gifts, which
were too obscure for most in attendance -- never mind this list. Chris
Patrick, judge of the kangaroo court, named the top 10 fines. Among
them:

Coach Cahoon, for several malappropisms ("discom- Botch-ulism" among
them); Syl Apps for some horrible dancing on the European trip, complete
with evidence thereof in the form of a color photo; Jeff Halpern for a
n outburst in response to the Hanson song "Where's the Love?" ("what do
they know about love? they have never been in love"); and others too
incriminating or obscure for public consumption.

Brian Horst and Shirreffs succeed Patrick as the co-judges.

The captains for next year are Halpern and Apps (not much suspense there).

Assistant coach Mark Dennehy put together a tremendous highlight tape of
the playoff run, including many memorable Halpern goals, a big Morin hit
on Christopher Aisworth of Clarkson and many great Saltarelli stops.

Amusing moments included presenter Mo Cheston '59 describing how players
of his era had to resurface the ice (and scrape it) by hand, which led
coach Cahoon to postulate that such a practice might be good for his
players on occasion. Not many laughs from the players on that thought, but
plenty from the rest of the crowd. Cheston, who was presenting the
Blackwell award, noted that "sportsmanship" was not his own forte -- he
said that he was "more like Benoit Morin, spending a lot of time in the
penalty box."

Needless to say, the players and the rest of the attendees were in good
spirits. Seniors Casson Masters, Erasmo Saltarelli and Matt Brush hope
to play hockey next year (Masters in Europe, the others looking at ECHL
tryouts), Joey Pelle is looking at interning with a TV network, Patrick
will work for a NY investment bank and Sinclair is undecided (at least
as far as I know). The theme of the night was the tremendous leadership
that this class provided.
