Colorado College becomes another team to join the ranks in St. Paul next
week, as they defeat Alaska Anchorage 5-2 tonight.
There was no scoring in the first or most of the second period. The
Seawolves seemed to be playing better tonight, and CC wasn't connecting on
their passes quite as well. There also didn't seem to be as many shots taken
as there were last night. Both Lee Schill and Judd Lambert made some great
saves to keep the score tied at nothing for so long.
The Tigers finally broke the scoring drought with about 4 minutes left in
the second period on a power play goal by Jason Gudmundson. Senior defenseman
David Paxton widened the lead to two at about two and a half minutes into
the third, getting his fourth goal in the last six games. The Seawolves
weren't about to be rolled over again, as they got a power play goal four
minutes later after Paul Williams and Eric Rud fought for possesion of the
puck in front of the Tiger net and it bounced in off of Rud's stick, making
the score 2-1. Midway through the period, however, Colin Schmidt would get
the goal back for CC as he took a beautiful shot from the blueline, with no
one to pass but Schill, which the puck did. In the 15th minute, Eric Rud
made up for his earlier mistake by putting the puck into the Seawolves net.
Anchorage still tried to make a comeback as Todd Bethard scored a power play
goal with 1:42 left on a penalty to Ryan Reynard. Schill was pulled for
the extra attacker after a timeout, and they put pressure on the Tiger net,
but CC got it away, and after a missed shot by Jon Steiner, R.J. Enga
grabbed the puck and casually wrapped it around for the empty net goal to
seal Alaska's fate with 26 seconds left.
The Tigers are now off to St. Paul next week to compete in the Final Five,
where they haven't been since 1992. The timing is quite convenient for the
team this year, as the block ends Wednesday and spring break begins for a
week and a half. Now to see if the Tigers can pull off a double championship
and claim the Broadmoor Trophy as well....Good luck to everyone in the Final
Five next week!
