Dear Professor Hatlen,
My name is Joshua Prager. I am a feature writer at the Wall Street Journal and currently on leave writing a book for Pantheon Books. The book is based on an article I wrote about baseball, about the 1951 Giants, a home run hit by Bobby Thomson and a
sign-stealing scheme. The article, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, ran on January 31, 2001.
I am a lover of poetry and have been looking high and low for any and all mentions of Thomson's home run in the writings of the great poets. I know that from time to time, Pound wrote of baseball in his letters. And I know that when Thomson fired
his ‘Shot Heard Round the World’ at 3:57 pm on October 3, 1951, Pound was a paitient at Saint Elizabeth's. Is there any way you can help me figure out if Pound wrote of Thomson's shot. I would love to include such a find in my book. Perhaps you can
post my query on your Pound list-serve--I'd be very grateful. (I have thus far found mentions of the home run in the writings of among others, including John Steinbeck and Julius Rosenberg.
You may contact me by phone at 212-787-1804, or by email. Thank you so very much.
Sincerely,
Josh
