"De vulgari eloquio" means: "On vernacular." "De
vulgari eloquentia" means : "On vernacular oratory."
Is it lucid?

"De vulgari eloquio" seems to be a wrong title. It
considers that this book goes on inquiring about
language, generally speaking. But this book was just a
prologue to a  treatise on rhetoric that Dante wanted
to write but abandoned.

It seems that Pound chose this wrong title suiting
much more to his own preoccupations, and reflecting
the work done instead of Dante's unaccomplished plan.

I read in a note under the title of my Dante in
French:

"DE L'ELOQUENCE EN LANGUE VULGAIRE, De vulgari
eloquentia: on a dit autrefois, abusivement, De
vulgari eloquio, "De la langue vulgaire", sous
prétexte que le livre premier parle de la langue en
général. Mais il n'est qu'un prologue au traité de
rhétorique italienne entrepris par Dante, puis
abandonné vers la fin de 1304. On voit ainsi qu'il
considérait comme un apanage de la rhétorique les lois
d ela poésie lyrique, et par excellence de la chanson
(II, iv 2) (etc...)"
