This actually happened.  Here is the story:

A couple Maine fans are riding the train to Boston several years back.
The conductor comes up to us and asks us why we are going to Boston.
We say that we are going to the FleetCenter for Hockey East Tournament.
Using my best recollection, here are the quotes:

Conductor (who is obviously from Massachusetts):  Oh, who is playing?
Us:  Maine, BC, Lowell and Merrimack
Conductor:  Merrimack, isn't that a junior college?
Us:  <laughter>
