Gino Saviotti reports a meeting with ep at Rapallo in
1959 in which the latter
hands him a sheet of paper on which he had written by
hand, "Every man has
the right to have his ideas examined one at time."
We're all aware of layers
underneath this, but I have a simple question of fact.
That same evening, Ez told Saviotti that when he got
off the boat at Naples he quoted a remark
fromGronchibut none of the reporters recognized the
source. Gronchi was President of the
Repubblica at that time.

Here's the question. What did ep say when he got off
the boat?

Neither Stock nor Carpenter reports the remark. The
slapdash Carpenter
doesn't even get the date right. The date of the
<Corriere della sera> that
reported the arrival on the <Cristoforo Colombo> is 10
July. Printed a photo withEz looking hale as Neptune
and underneath a caption, but no article. Caption
says Pound "stopped yesterday at Naples and will leave
this morning for Genova
on the <CC>." That puts his arrival on the 9th. Perry
Como arrived in Rome on
the 10th and got a much bigger write-up.

Still, a newspaper somewhere reported the comment Ez
made, or otherwisea year later he wouldn't be saying
the journalists didn't recognize the source.
Yes, there is a point to all this. All biographers
report in disapproving tone the
(in)famous Roman salute to show P is unrepentent. Yet
Gronchi, though I'm told
he was something of a nonentity, had good
left-of-center christian credentials. He
isn't likely to have produced any fascist slogans for
Pound to repeat.

At any rate, not to be too long-winded, does anyone
know what the poet
said, or know who knows?
