WOMEN'S HOCKEY ROLLS OVER UCONN 5-1 ON SENIOR DAY
The Maine women's hockey team scored three first period goals en route to a
5-1 win over Connecticut in the final game of the regular season this
afternoon at Alfond Arena. Maine now enters the postseason with a 12-14-4
(5-8-2) record, while Connecticut fell to 11-19-4 (3-9-3).
Maine wasted no time in getting on the board as Raffi Wolf (Voerde, Germany)
fed Meagan Aarts (Watford, Ontario) on a textbook two-on-one to give the
Black Bears a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game just 3:43 into the
first period. UM made it 2-0 at the 11:23 mark as Cindy Biron (Lewiston,
Maine) fed a streaking Jarin Sjogren (Bengough, Saskatchewan) for Sjogren's
eighth of the season. Tristan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta) scored Maine's
third goal on a wrist shot from the outside of the left faceoff circle that
beat Uconn goalie Shannon Murphy high to the far post.
Connecticut pulled the score within two in the second period as Tiffany
Owens snuck a rebound past Maine goalie Dawn Froats (Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan) on a 5-on-3 power play advantage at 11:51. The Huskies
generated some good scoring opportunities in the period, but Froats came up
big with some point-blank saves. Kaitlin Shain took over the Husky
goaltending duties for the last two periods.
The Black Bears tacked on two more goals in the final frame. Katie Hartley
(Duxbury, Mass.) fed Nicole Munro (Egmondville, Ontario) in front of the net
for Munro's sixth of the season at 11:51, and Biron rounded out the scoring
with an empty net goal at 19:28 of the third period.
Connecticut outshot Maine 22-20 for the game, but Froats (8-3-1) was
outstanding in a 21-save performance. Murphy took the loss for the Huskies,
dropping to 5-15-4 on the season.
Maine's six seniors were honored during a short ceremony before the opening
faceoff. Cindy Biron, Dawn Froats, Cailee Heggestad, Jarin Sjogren, Nicole
Munro, and Raffi Wolf played in their last home game as a member of Maine
hockey. Sjogren and Froats were also honored with the Black Bear award,
which is given to a women's hockey player/s who demonstrates excellence on
the ice, as well as in the classroom and in the community.
The Black Bears now take their third-place seed into the Hockey East
tournament, March 14-16, at Matthews Arena on the Northeastern University
campus in Boston, Mass.
