        PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars earned a weekend
sweep
against the Maine Black Bears with a 7-2 victory in HOCKEY EAST action
at
PC's Schneider Arena on Saturday, Dec. 6.  The win gave Providence a 2-1
record against the Black Bears this season and marked the first time the
Friars won a regular-season series against Maine since the 1985-86
season.
        Maine took an early lead as Matthias Trattnig one timed a shot past PC
netminder Boyd Ballard at 1:40 of the first period.  PC stormed back
with
the next two goals as Mike Omicioli slapped in a short-handed tally at
3:46
and Fernando Pisani wristed in a rebound at the 8:28 mark.  Maine's
Scott
Parmentier tallied the final goal of the first period and evened the
game at
2-2 at 9:15.
        PC went up 4-2 after two periods on goals by Nick Lent and Doug
Sheppard.
Lent poked in a rebound for his fourth goal of the season 4:28 of the
second
and Sheppard finished a two-on-one break away, depositing his seventh
tally
of the year at the 12:26 mark.
        PC built on its lead in the third period as Troy Lake netted two goals
and
Nick Sinerate added one tally for the Friars.
        Ballard held Maine scoreless over the final two periods and earned the
game's No. 1 star after making 32 stops.  Maine netminder Alfie Michaud
recorded 27 stops.
        With the win PC raised its record to 10-3-1 overall and 5-3 in HOCKEY
EAST
while Maine fell to 7-7-1 and 4-5-0 in league play.
        Providence College will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 27 against
Vermont in the Sheraton/USAirways Tournament in Burlington, Vt. at 6:00
p.m.
