Maine Women Edge UConn 3-2
The University of Maine women's hockey team skated to a 3-2 win over the
University of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena. The
Black Bears scored three first period goals and held the Huskies the rest of
the way, as Maine will head into next weekend's ECAC quarterfinals in fifth
place in the Eastern Division.
Maine (16-14-4, 8-10-3) awaits the result of Sunday's matchup between
Providence and Boston College, as Providence could move into third place
with a win, pushing New Hampshire back into fourth position in the league.
The Black Bears came out strong in the first period, scoring three straight
goals. Karen Droog fired a shot that bounced up and over the left shoulder
of UConn goalie Shannon Murphy at 5:37 for her 25th of the season. Cheryl
White made it 2-0 when she lifted one into the left side of the net, and
Andrea Steranko followed up two minutes later with her sixth of the season
to take a 3-0 lead after one period.
UConn fought back, scoring once in the second period and once again in the
third. The Huskies pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker with
1:35 left, but could not find the back of net as Maine held on for the
victory.
Murphy made 29 saves for UConn, while Lara Smart stopped 27 shots enroute to
her fifth win of the season. Maine outshot UConn 32-29 overall.
With the win today, Maine concluded its regular season schedule and awaits
its opponent for the ECAC Eastern League Tournament which starts next
weekend.
