HARVARD SKATES PAST MAINE 8-2
ORONO, MAINE--Harvard University scored five third period goals to break
open a 3-1 game and defeat the University of Maine women's ice hockey team
8-2 in ECAC action Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena. Harvard improves to
20-8-0 on the season, 19-4-0 in ECAC action, while Maine falls to 14-14-1,
9-13-1 in conference play. With the loss, Maine is mathematically
eliminated from the ECAC playoffs scheduled for next weekend.
Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. John's Ravenscourt) opened the
scoring for Harvard at 8:27 with her 36th goal of the season. Lauren
McAuliffe (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) gave the Crimson a 2-0 lead
just 33 seconds later, and Tammy Shewchuk (St. Laurent, Quebec/Taft) made
it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.
Maine scored the lone goal of the second period when Rebecca Ouellet
(Amesbury, Mass./Chelmsford) scored her first collegiate goal as she threw
a long shot on net from the boards that found the back of the net.
Harvard took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but scored three goals in
the first six minutes to break open the game. Shewchuk scored her second
of the game at 1:03, and teammate Kiirsten Suurkask (Tsawwassen, British
Columbia/South Delta Secondary) made it 5-1 with her 11th of the season
just 1:33 later.
Tracy Catlin Cambridge, Mass./St. Paul's) added to the Crimson lead with
her ninth goal of the season at 5:48. Botterill was not done however, and
she put Harvard up 7-1 with her 37th goal of the season at 13:17. Maine
answered just 30 seconds later when Karen Droog (Listowel, Ontario/Peel
Storm) scored her 21st goal of the campaign to make it a 7-2 score.
LeeAnne Irwin (Freeport, N.Y.) picked up an assists on the Droog tally.
Pam Van Reessema (Greeenwich, Conn./Taft) closed out the scoring for
Harvard at 16:03 with her third goal of the season.
Harvard outshot the Black Bears 49-19. Amanda Cronin (York, Maine/New
Hampton Prep) made 41 saves in net for the Black Bears while counterpart
Jessica Ruddock (Guelph, Ontario/Taft) stopped 17 UMaine shots.
Maine will play its season finale tomorrow (March 4, 2001) at 3:00 p.m. at
Alfond Arena when it hosts Brown, while Harvard will travel to the
University of New Hampshire for a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
