BLACK BEARS DEFEAT CLARKSON, 4-2

ESTERO, Florida - The University of Maine hockey team defeated Clarkson
University in the opening round of the Everblades College Classic in Estero,
Florida, 4-2 on Wednesday evening. The Black Bears advance to the title game of
the tournament to be held at TECO Arena on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
Clarkson took the early lead against Maine when freshman Mike Nagai took a
perfect centering pass from senior Don Smith and knocked in his own rebound at
4:45 of the first for his second goal of the season. Maine got on the
scoreboard when it took advantage of its third straight power play opportunity
with a man-advantage marker at 15:58 from Martin Kariya.
Robert Liscak put the Black Bears ahead at 5:53 of the second period. Francis
Nault scored his first collegiate goal at 9:04 of the third period to push the
cushion to 3-1. Just 73 seconds later, sophomore Kevin O'Flaherty made it a
one-goal game converting on a rebound opportunity at the top of the crease.
With just 34.3 seconds remaining, Dan Kerluke sealed the victory for Maine with
an empty net goal for the final 4-2 score.
The Black Bears outshot Clarkson 31-29. Matt Yeats made 27 saves in the win for
the Black Bears. Karl Mattson posted 27 saves for the Knights. Clarkson was
0-of-3 on the power play, while Maine was 1-of-4 with the man-advantage.
Maine will face Cornell in the tournament's championship game.
