SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Coyotes have added a collegiate
champion with NHL roots, signing free agent defenseman David Cullen to a
multi-year contract.
 
Terms of the deal were undisclosed.
 
Cullen, a First Team Hockey East All-Star, helped the University of Maine to
its second national championship last Saturday.  He led all Black Bears
defenseman in scoring this season with 11 goals and 33 assists while posting
a plus-36 rating.
 
The 22-year-old Cullen is the cousin of John Cullen, who recently beat cancer
before ending his 10-season NHL career in November while with Tampa Bay.
David Cullen's uncles -- Barry, Brian and Ray -- also played in the NHL.
 
David Cullen, 6-2, 209 pounds, recorded 28 goals and 89 assists in 146 games
at Maine.  The Ontario native is the third Black Bear on Phoenix's roster,
joining defenseman Keith Carney and center Bob Corkum.
