Our thoughts and prayers to the Kariya family during this difficult time..
here's the story from the AP:

Kariya Plays Despite Death of Father

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Anaheim captain Paul Kariya was in the Mighty
Ducks lineup Saturday night despite the sudden death of his father a day
earlier.

Kariya, a Vancouver native, practiced with his teammates on Friday and then
left to visit with his family in nearby North Vancouver. At some point
during the day, Tetsuhiko Kariya suffered a fatal heart attack.

Paul Kariya participated in the morning skate, and the decision whether to
play against the Vancouver Canucks was left up to him.

Kariya, who leads the Mighty Ducks with 15 goals and 35 points, has the
option to stay in Vancouver with his family while the team travels to
Calgary for a game Sunday night. Anaheim is scheduled to play in Minnesota
on Tuesday night.

Paul's younger brother, Steve, who plays for the Canucks' AHL farm team was
en route to Vancouver from Manitoba. Steve did not play in his team's game
Saturday night.

Tetsuhiko Kariya, a retired school teacher, is survived by his wife Sharon,
three sons and two daughters.
