PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville, MA) tallied twice in
the second period to spark Maine (5-3-3, 2-1-1) to a 6-2 victory over Brown
(1-6-0, 0-5-0) in a non-conference men's ice hockey contest Friday night at
Meehan Auditorium.
Maine got on the board at 14:45 of the first period, as freshman Mike
Mantenuto (Holliston, MA) skate the puck in from the blue line and beat
junior keeper Brian Eklund (Braintree, MA) on a point-blank shot.
However, the second stanza was when the Black Bears really took advantage,
outshooting Brown 16-3. Dimitrakos netted his first of the night on the
power play at 1:19 of the second, scoring his second, 12 minutes later, at
13:43 to give Maine a 3-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later, at 16:21, a power play goal by sophomore
Michael Schutte (Burlington, ONT) gave the Black Bears a 4-0 lead at the end
of two periods.
Brown started the third stanza with a goalie change, and the offense
destroyed Maine's hopes of a shutout at 12:55 of the third. Freshman Vincent
Macri (Durham, NH) tallied his first collegiate goal on a slap shot from 15
feet out that slipped past Maine's Matt Yeats (Innisfail, ALB) and directly
into the center of the net. Senior Christian Warrington (Slatersville, RI)
was credited with an assist on the play.
Less than three minutes later, however, sophomore Lucas Lawson (Braeside,
ONT) put the Black Bears back up by four and at 18:07 sophomore Robert
Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) gave Maine a five-goal lead, it's largest of the
night. Brown managed one more goal before the end of the game as sophomore
Keith Kirley (Leverett, MA) netted an unassisted score at 18:27 of the
third.
Eklund stopped 24 Maine shots in two periods, while freshman Yann Danis
(Lafontaine, QUE) made five saves in the third stanza. Yeats stopped 17
shots in 60 minutes of action for the Black Bears.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday night at Dartmouth.
