UNIVERSITY OF MAINE (21-7-4) - The defending national champion Maine Black
Bears are currently ranked sixth in the country ... Maine has posted a
12-7-3 record in HOCKEY EAST action and is tied for third place in league
standings ... Last weekend, Maine swept a two-game series against Merrimack
at Orono, Maine.  The Black Bears currently have a six-game winning streak
... Maine won the only meeting between the two teams this season, 5-2, at
Orono, Maine on November 7, 1999 ...  The Black Bears have posted a 40-26-1
mark all-time against the Friars.  In Maine's only appearance at PC last
season, the Black Bears defeated the Friars, 7-4, on January 29, 1999 ...
Senior forward Cory Larose (Campbellton, New Brunswick) leads the team in
scoring (44 points) and assists (31).  Sophomore goaltender Matt Yeats
(Innisfail, Alberta) has played in 24 of the team's 32 games this season.
He has posted a 15-5-3 mark, a 2.51 goals against average and a .911 save
percentage.
 
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (18-15-1) - The Friars enter the weekend series against
Maine with hopes of moving up in the HOCKEY EAST standings. PC, 10-12,
begins the weekend series in sixth place in league standings, one point
behind fifth-place Northeastern ... Last week, the Friars swept a two-game
series against UMass-Lowell.  PC has registered a 6-2 mark in its last
eight games ... Saturday's contest with Maine will be the Friars' final
home game this season ... PC has posted a 7-7 mark this season against
ranked opponents ... The Friars are 14-13-0 all-time against the Black
Bears at Schneider Arena ... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn,
Saskatchewan) made 79 saves and recorded a 2-0 mark, a 2.00 goals against
average and a .952 save percentage in the Friars' two HOCKEY EAST wins
against UMass-Lowell on February 25-26.   This season, Ballard has posted a
12-10 mark, a 2.77 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
Freshman Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) was named HOCKEY EAST Rookie
of the Week on Monday after recording two goals and one assist in PC's two
wins against UMass-Lowell on February 25-26.
