Lindsay will follow with the full boxscore in a bit.
When the Tsongas staff finally decided to start posting SOG this game, it
told it all - end of two periods: Maine up 28-6 on shots and 2-0 in goals.
Shawn gave Alfie a rest tonite, putting in Mike Morrison to face the 'Cats.
On the few chances given up by the stingy Maine defence, he performed well,
sending rebounds away very cleanly.
All scoring was over at the 8:23 mark of the initial period. Maine was
swarming in the offensive zone, putting in second opportunites, with Cory
Larose tallying both of the Maine scores on follow-ups. Vermont was
particularly ineffectve around the crease, in support of Andrew Allen in
their net.
Vermont employed the old clutch and grab in the corners, and the trap
between the blue lines. Not a bad strategy when it seemed they were the
more tired of the two squads. Maine responded by running the old
dump-and-chase after they gained the two-goal lead.
Morrison's only real test came about midway in the second period, and Maine
within seconds clamped down on Vermont with Doug Janik putting on a hold,
earning a two-minute rest (he's looking better every shift on D) but
sending a clear message -- stay out.
Dan and Lindsay's Three Stein awards (Maine players only!!):
# 3 - Steve Kariya: Gained an assist on the first Maine goal, but split the
trap very effectively on many more occasions to force Vermont out of its
game and into the Maine rushing style.
# 2 - Mike Morrison: One word: Shutout. Very effective in playing rebounds
away and giving few second chance opportunities. Shawn should feel good
about the possibilities of a rotation in certain of the upcoming series.
# 1 - Cory Larose: Deposited both opportunities squandered by a generous
Vermont defence. Just the boost he needs to set up the remainder of this
season.
It's already raining 'Cats...now bring on the Dogs !!
