Apt, twisted, usually divine, retribution. Compare Apollo's punishment of
Cassandra. She had learned the power of prohecy from the god who punished
her, for spurinng his love, by causing everyone to disbelieve what she
said. Pound refers to the dadaist Else von Freytag-Loringhoven, "who said
several true things," as "Kassandra" in XCV:

The immense cowardice of advertised litterati
      & Elsa Kassandra, "the Baroness"
von Freitag etc. sd/ several true things
in the old days /
                     driven nuts...

Speaking of spurned love... Williams punchedthis woman in the face one day
for coming to his home and offering to give him syphilis to open his mind.
