I kind of think that maybe he would have.  Worn it almost
constantly except maybe to bed, wearing it on a cheap chain
around his neck over his scruffy shirts open at the collar
and whatever he wore in Italy.  He would have joked about it,
saying things like, "A thousand dollars would have been a lot
more useful," but at the same time taking a certain
semi-facetious pride in the fact that at last somebody had
done at least something to acknowledge his ceaseless struggle.
