the quote, given more exactly by Tim Redman, is given in Cookson's introduction
to his Selected Prose (p. 18). EP seems to having sad these wwords when  he gave
himself over to the US Military at Genoa, 1945.
 
I'm sure you'll find more about it in Heymann and/or Carpenter.
