Williams' idea that the sonnet does not admit of variation is strongly
contradicted by poems by Milton and Hopkins, poems clearly taking the
sonnet as a base and varying or building on it. See e.g. Milton's "On the
New Forces of Conscience." and the lyrics Hopkins called "curtal-sonnets."
