Charles Moyer recently quoted the following remark made by Pound.

"The minute you proclaim that the mysteries exist at all you've got to
recognize that 95% of yr. contemporaries will not and can not understand one
word of what you are driving at. And you can not explain. The SECRETUM stays
shut to the vulgo. And H. Christian said years ago re catholics: 'For god's
sake leave 'em in there (i.e., church) If they weren't in there doing that,
they wd. be out here pour nous embeter'. -/-/"

Let us analyze the quote.

" "The minute you proclaim that the mysteries exist at all you've got to
recognize that 95% of yr. contemporaries will not and can not understand one
word of what you are driving at. . . ."

Why will they not understand? Is it at least in part because oppressive
religious hierachies have sought to monopolize the formulation of truth and
turned it into dogma? Is it because the priests and pastors have seldom
encouraged (or even allowed) individuals to question or think about the
essential truths? Should the purpose of "insightful" people like Pound be
to curse the masses in their ignorance, or to help lift them up?

"The SECRETUM stays
shut to the vulgo."

Does it stay shut AT LEAST IN PART because people like Pound believe that
because of their innate endowment only they know the truth? Is it because
this endowment (whether it is superior artistic ability or superior
intellect) entitles them to have special status? How does such a view
differ substantially from Freemasonry, with its secret handshakes, behind
closed door meetings, and its claim to a monopoly on the truth?

"And H. Christian said years ago re catholics: 'For god's
sake leave 'em in there (i.e., church) If they weren't in there doing that,
they wd. be out here pour nous embeter'. -/-/"

How does this differ from the point of view of the "Grand Inquisitor" who
says, keep the masses in the Churches, so they will not agitate, they will
be kept like sheep in the pen, so that we on the outside (or on the top) who
know the truth, will guide them.

Above all, is it not consistent with the remarks we discussed early (which
Pound made in the Radio Speeches) about the ultimate compatibility of
fascism and Catholicism? (Fascism and Catholicism work to create a "sound
economic system").

Pound it would seem, does not merely decry ignorance or the alleged
inability of the masses to comprehend essential truths. He does not
denounce the Church's oppression of the masses. He wants to "leave them in
there."

I want to thank Charles Moyer for presenting the quote, and ask whether he
(or anyone else) has another interpretation of it.

Regards,

Wei
