sympathy to his family.

Dear Phil,

I am writing to let you know that my father died Monday morning, May
14th. He was in good spirits as we enjoyed Mother's Day dinner together
Sunday night. He died Monday morning while rising from bed. It seems to
have been a good end to a very good life. We will be having a service and
burial here in Oakland on Friday, May 18.

Please do inform the members of the Chicago Psychoanalytic
Institute and the Society. Jerry never lost his passion for psychoanalysis
and for the stimulation of the rich psychoanalytic community in all its
aspects. We were especially pleased to receive the proofs of his latest
publication, "The Dreams of Ezra Pound," just these last few weeks. With
pride, I will provide the acceptance quote from the editors of Paideuma, A
scholarly publication primarily devoted to Ezra Pound, "Because of your own
role in Pound's life, the essay is both a contribution to Pound scholarship,
and an historical document in its own right. For this reason we would like
to include the piece in a new documentary section of the journal with a
brief introductory note."

We will be drafting an obituary and expect to publish it here and in
the Chicago Tribune.

With good wishes, Audrey

"Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love." – Reinhold Niebuhr
