At Brunnenburg last summer, I mentioned to some people that I was
organising a study tour on the Troubadours through the Department for
Continuing Education at the University of Oxford and I said that I
would post further information later on this list. So here it is:

This study tour, called "On the Trail of the Troubadours", will take
place this summer from the 7th to the 18th of September. We're
basically going to walk the old Troubadour trails from castle to
castle in the Languedoc, through the foothills of the Pyrenees. We'll
begin in the fortified town of Carcassonne and end in the old city of
Foix, spending the days between hiking to such splendid ruins as the
Chateau de Peyrepertuse, the Chateau de Queribus, the Chateau de
Puilarens, the Chateau de Puivert and, Pound would insist on this, the
Chateau de Montsegur. In other words, we'll be visiting some of the
same sites that Pound visited on his walking tour through this region
in 1912.

Other sites along the way will include the thirteenth-century village
of Villerouge-Termenes, the Gorge de Galamus, the Ermitage St-Antoine,
the Defile de Pierre-Lys and the Gorges de la Frau. One evening along
the route, Jon Erik Schelander, a member of the Board of Directors of
the Centre de Recherche et d'Expression de la Musique Medievale in
Carcassonne, will perform the songs of the Troubadours for us in old
Provencal and talk about medieval music and instruments.

At the moment, we're suggesting an "indicative price" of £1290. This
is based on fifteen participants; should the number rise to our
maximum of eighteen, the price will, of course, be a bit less. It is
based on sharing a twin / double room and includes all air fares (from
London Gatwick), all transport, admission fees and accommodation in
small two and three-star family hotels, with demi-pension, except for
the evenings in Carcassonne and Foix when you are free to make your
own dining arrangements.

If you have any questions about the tour, you could simply e-mail me.
Or if you'd like a brochure with more details and a day-to-day
itinerary of the walk, you could contact Mr Daniel Moore at Distant
Horizons, 4 Amherst Road, Manchester M14 6UQ (England). His phone
number is 0161-2255317, his fax number is 0161-7185478, and his e-mail
address is [log in to unmask]
