E. Fuller Torrey in _The Roots of Treason_ says that Pound was awarded a
Masters Degree in June of 1906.  He was also awarded a fellowship to begin
work on a doctorate.  There were problems, though, and according to Torrey:
 
"For reasons which are not known, the patience of the faculty expired during
Pound's 1906-07 graduate year and his fellowship was abruptly withdrawn.
Pound protested and even sought out the founder of the fellowship program for
a clarification of its purpose, but to no avail; the University of
Pennsylvania had had enough.  The dismissal was a blow to his academic
aspirations and would become a festering sore on his ego.  He attempted to be
readmitted to the program in 1910 and again in 1911 but was refused.  In
1920, Pound's father sounded out the university about the possibility of an
honorary doctorate for his son; in 1932 Pound submitted his translations of
Cavalcanti in lieu of a thesis, but the university refused to consider
either."  (Torrey 36-37)
