Hi all
Several years ago, an author named Thomas Johnson contacted McArthur
Library to ask if we would like to be featured in a book project about New
England libraries. Of course, we agreed, and it's been a fascinating
journey working with him, and he's been a useful source of information on
many topics for me.
The book is coming out officially on February 4th, 2023 and is called
Common Place: *The Public Library, Civil Society and Early America Values.*
I believe 16 libraries are included, and Bridgton Public Library and
McArthur Library are the two featured from Maine. Former ALA President
Maureen Sullivan was his advisor on the project, wrote the Foreword, and
will be at the launch.
The author has launched a website in advance of the publication date.
There's quite a lot of background info there, and some great photos!

Relevant excerpts of a recent email I received from Thomas are below in
italics (although do note that I don't see the title on the publisher's
website just yet...)
*The formal launch is scheduled for Saturday, February 4th in the community
hall at the Munson Memorial Library in Amherst. It will run between 11:00
and 1:00. My principal advisor on the project and author of
the book's foreword, former ALA President and current Chair of the
Connecticut State Library Board, Maureen Sullivan plans to attend. *
*...books can be ordered from the publisher, Levellers Press, based here in
Amherst. *

*... It took a while, but the book turned out very well. It is something we
can all be proud of. It is dedicated to librarians in America, past,
present and future. When I wrote those words I was thinking of people like
you.*
We are honored to be included, and can't wait to see the final publication.
It may be something you want to include in your collection.
Thanks!
Jeff
