  In fact if one googles Elio/Pound/back door
one can get a number of sources, but they are
ALL second hand.

  Curious that Kenner didn't put it in
THE INVISIBLE POET:T.S. ELIOT. Kenner started
off with  my mentor, Marshall McLuhan. They
parted company on disagreements over an Eliot
project. McLuhan had some hard feelings about it.
His words about Kenner were not encouraging.

I'm not sure this will help but I think I recall this story also being
related
in one of the sections of Michael Levenson's _A Genealogy of Modernism_.
I
believe it was the discussion of TSE and EP in the book's epilogue, "The
Editor
and the loathed disturber."  Apologies that I can't be more specific.
