WOMEN'S HOCKEY MAKES PLAYOFFS WITH 2-0 WIN OVER UCONN

The Maine women's hockey team locked up a spot in the Hockey East playoffs
this afternoon with a 2-0 win shutout of Connecticut at Alfond Arena. Maine
(11-14-4, 4-8-2) and Connecticut (11-18-4, 3-8-3) meet again tomorrow as
Uconn tries to sure up the last remaining spot in the tournment.

The action was back and forth in the first period, with each team managing
only a few good scoring opportunities. Maine's Meagan Aarts (Watford,
Ontario) skated in on a breakaway midway through the period, but Connecticut
goalie Kaitlyn Shain made the stop to keep the game scoreless. Maine finally
lit the lamp at the 11:27 of the period when Nicole Munro (Edmondville,
Ontario) dug the puck out of the corner and passed to Naomi Smethurst (Hay
River, Northwest Terr.) at the top of the zone. Smethurst's slapshot was
deflected by Karen Droog (Listowel, Ontario) and past Shain into the net for
Droog's 15th goal of the season.

The Black Bears continued their aggressive play in the second period, taking
a 2-0 lead at 13:05 of the period. Aarts threaded a beautiful blue
line-to-blue line pass to a streaking Raffi Wolf (Voerde, Germany), who
faked Shain left before switching to her backhand and lifting the puck into
the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Connecticut tried to get something going in the third period, as the Huskies
put the pressure on in Maine's defensive zone. Connecticut's Megan McLeod
worked her way to the front of the net early in the third and took three
whacks at a loose puck, but Maine goalie Lara Smart (Airdrie, Alberta) stood
her ground and kept the Huskies off the board. Shain came out of the game in
favor of an extra attacker with 1:20 left, but Maine's defense held and the
Black Bears came away with the 2-0 victory.

Connecticut outshot Maine 21-20 for the game, but Smart was the difference,
stopping everything that came her way for her fourth win, and third shutout
of the season. Shain made 18 saves, but dropped to 6-4-0 with the loss.

Maine and Connecticut will square off again tomorrow in another 1:00 p.m.
start at Alfond Arena. Maine will have a short ceremony during the pregame
introductions to honor its six seniors playing in their last regular season
home game.
