Dear Librarians:

McFarland has justagreed to drop the price of my Louis XVI biography to $29.95, which now puts itat a feasible price for libraries. The Kindle edition is on sale for only $3.03until May 22.

Riveting eyewitnessaccounts from the memoirs of this tumultuous period make my short andaccessible biography an exciting and rewarding book for scholars, students, andthe general public. Louis XVI lacked charisma, but he exhibited great physicaland moral courage as he tried to stem the violence swirling around him.

As events in the MiddleEast demonstrate how difficult it is to control a revolution once it is set inmotion, it is useful to ponder one of the most famous revolutions in historyand its unfortunate descent from lofty goals into chaos and extreme violence. As Gouverneur Morris noted in his famous Diaryof the French Revolution:

Itis not possible to say either to the people or to the sea, so far shalt thou goand no farther, and we shall have I think some sharp struggles which will makemany men repent of what they have done when they find with Macbeth that theyhave but taught bloody instructions which return to plague the inventor.

Use the “Look Inside”feature on the Amazon webpage for this biography to read my Preface, whichdetails my almost complete reliance on primary sources. Albert Camus's take onLouis XVI, which I include in the Preface, may surprise you. If you wish tolearn more about the book before purchasing it for your library, I would beglad to e-mail you attached files for a key chapter or two.

Given the largeFranco-Canadian population in New England, my book is a particularly apt choicefor your collection.

Thank you for your attention,

Alison Johnson
