THE MAINE POETRY EXPRESS STEAMS ONTO SWAN?S ISLAND
On January 17 at 1:00 p.m., the Swan?s Island Library will host an
afternoon of poetry as a stop for the Maine Poetry Express, an
initiative of Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair. This is an afternoon
event, which means a day-trip to Swan's Island for poetry and good
people can be had by all.
The Maine Poetry Express is traveling to a series of 14 stops
throughout the state over the next few months, bringing together Maine
poets and townspeople for shared readings that combine poetry with
testimonies about poetry and its relevance to the lives and concerns
of all people.
The site organizers, or ?conductors,? of the event are Candis Joyce,
director of the Swan?s Island Educational Society, and Gary Rainford,
poet and English professor. The conductors will be joined by
featured poets Wes McNair and Gary Rainford, along with special
guests Sonny Sprague, Bev McAloon, Dexter Lee, and Swan?s Island
School students to recite Maine poems.
The primary goal of the Maine Poetry Express, McNair explains, is to
show that poetry belongs not only to literary specialists but to all
of us. He adds: ?This promises to be an evening of poetry as you?ve
never heard it before!?
The Maine Poetry Express is sponsored by Maine Writers & Publishers
Alliance and Maine Humanities council.
