I use a knife to remove labels.  I have my "favorite knife" that I  
like to use, it's just a small one, almost like a paring knife.

Goo Gone is my go to solvent for removing the sticky residue left  
behind once I peel off a label and sometimes I even put some Goo Gone  
on the label itself to soften it before I use my knife.  Just be  
careful of getting the paper cover too wet.
