Ah true, but they could have chosen a sub-domain (e.g. um.maine.edu) or
they could have used a directory (maine.edu/um), but instead, I assume,
they wanted a domain name that could be easily recognized and easily
remembered, thus umaine.edu.
Incidently, I could TEN (10) references to "UMaine" on the front page
of the University of Maine web site (http://www.umaine.edu).
It would seem that the public relations department and the athletic
department have different views on what to call themselves.
