Here are a few comments on the Gopher Hockey Awards Brunch that was held
this morning.



It was quite an upbeat but small crowd at the banquet.  Mostly parents and
staff, but sprinkled with a few fans here and there.  I am very glad I went.
Several of the players shared sides of themselves that I never would have
seen.



I shook hands and had a few words with all the seniors and also Jacob Cepis,
and Mike Hoeffel.



Ryan Flynn is shy and soft spoken, as was David Fischer.  Brian Schack is
like a ray of sunshine, smiling wherever he goes.  Mike Carman and Tony
Lucia seemed very confident and grown-up.



There were some tears in the senior speeches and also Coach Lucia when
speaking of having his son Tony on the team and how it really took both of
them adjusting to the reality of it all.



Most missed by all who spoke was Harry Broadfoot (aka: Boomer) who retired
last May. The new staff (Lee Greseth, Jeff Winslow and Chris Cords) were
welcomed to the fold and those leaving (Jim Strick) were bid farewell.



Four of the Freshmen were presented with their Letter Jackets for earning
their first letter in hockey this year: Budish, Helgeson, Birkholtz and
Leddy.  Larry Olimb and George Adzick from the M Club were there and did the
honors.



The awards were surprising, but as always the players got each one
right.  Although
Nick Leddy won the Rookie of the Year, the presenter also gave credit to
both Zach Budish and Josh Birkholtz.


Coach Lucia also lavished praise on his staff from the front office to the
locker room and included all the coaching staff.
