GIONTA SCORES FIVE IN BC'S 7-2 WIN OVER MAINE
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Brian Gionta scored five first-period goals - which
vaulted him into a tie for the lead for career goals at BC at 112 - as BC
skated past Maine, 7-2, before a sellout crowd at BC's Kelley Rink.
Gionta's five-goal, first-period outburst tied him with former Boston
College Hobey Baker Award winner David Emma, who scored 112 goals from
1987-91. The feat set a new HOCKEY EAST record for goals in one period.
The previous record was four, set by Maine's Martin Robitaille in 1990.
The victory, combined with wins over the Black Bears on Dec. 10 and Jan.
26, marked the first time BC swept the season series against Maine since
the 1989-90 season.
Gionta, who also set a new team mark for career hat tricks at BC with
nine, staked the Eagles to a 5-0 lead with goals at 7:57, 10:21, 14:37,
17:23 and 19:58. Two of the senior captains' goals were on the power play,
one was scored shorthanded.
Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew was the first player other than Gionta to
register a goal, when he tallied a power-play goal 1:43 into the second
period. Sophomore forward Krys Kolanos scored a four-on-four goal to
extend the Eagles' lead to 7-0 with 10:27 remaining in the second frame.
Maine (10-9-6, 5-6-4) defenseman Francis Nault scored at 13:56 to cut the
lead to six goals, and forward Michael Schutte registered a power-play
goal at 11:29 of the third to make the score 7-2. The man-advantage goal
ended a Boston College streak of 25 straight penalty kills.
Boston College score on half of its power-play opportunities, going
three-for-six on the night. Maine went one-for-10 with the man advantage.
Eagles' goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 28 saves for his fourth
consecutive win. Maine's Matt Yeats and Mike Morrison combined for 18
stops.
Second-ranked Boston College (19-6-1, 12-3-1) returns to action on Friday,
February 2, as the Eagles will by looking for the season sweep of the
UMass Lowell River Hawks. Game time at BC's Kelley Rink is 7 p.m.
