UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS ASSUMPTION, 5-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three first-period goals and went on to defeat visiting Assumption, 5-1, in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.
Senior forward Kyle McCullough opened the scoring, converting passes from junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and freshman defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) to give the Corsairs a 1-0 lead 5:29 into the first period. Junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) made it 2-0 four and a half minutes later when he scored at 9:50. Vrolyk was assisted by junior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy).
McCullough scored his second goal of the game, converting a pass from Grant to make it 3-0 at 15:48 of the first period. Atte Uola put the Ice Dogs on the board less than a minute later, converting a pass from Luke McDonough at 16:46.
After a scoreless second period, Grant scored a power play goal at 10:28 of the third period to make it 4-1, slamming home a feed in front of the net from McCullough. Senior defenseman Paul Carr (Springfield, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) assisted. Assumption pulled goalie Jamie DiGiulio for an extra attacker at 17:44, and senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) scored into an empty net at 18:43 to account for the final score.
“The first game after the break is usually a good possibility for an upset special, and I was concerned, because we only had four days of practice to get ready for this game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I knew that it would be more of a grinding game, as opposed to a skilled game. We had a very good first period, and in the third period we played a style that insured that we would hold the lead. The most important thing tonight is that we only gave up one goal.”
UMD out shot Assumption, 23-4 in the first period and 44-18 overall. Corsair sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Junior Warriors) made 17 saves, while DiGiulio made 39.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-1-1 and 5-0-0 in ECAC Northeast Conference play with the victory, while Assumption fell to 2-10-0 and 0-6-0. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salve Regina in a non-conference match up Thursday evening, while the Ice Dogs will resume play when they host Suffolk Thursday night.
