From John Gilbert's article in this morning's Tribune:
GOPHERS SHARE LEAD IN WCHA---And what a race the WCHA appears to be: Two
weekends into the season, the only team that doesn't have at least one loss or
tie in league play is Wisconsin, which had the second weekend off.
Actually, the Badgers hardly had last weekend off, struggling to a 2-1
victory and a 2-2 tie against Alaska-Anchorage in a nonconference series.
The focal point of the league last weekend was favorite North Dakota
playing at Northern Michigan, where the host Wildcats shocked the Sioux 6-0
before the teams played to a 5-5 tie Saturday night. Meanwhile, St. Cloud
State continued its strong start, rebounding from its tie and one-goal loss to
the Gophers to beat Colorado College 6-2 and 3-2 in overtime. Minnesota-Duluth
beat Michigan Tech 6-4 before the teams played to a 2-2 tie Saturday at
Houghton, Mich.
That meant the Gophers' 2-0 victory at Denver was the only one of five
games involving WCHA teams that didn't go into overtime.
The Gophers will be one of the "off" teams this weekend, facing Notre
Dame on Tuesday might and the Canadian National Team Friday and Saturday, all
at Mariucci Arena. The nonconference break gives the Gophers time to regroup
from an interesting and difficult WCHA schedule.
More from the campus newspaper later.
