I had the chance to catch both of RPIs games this past weekend (a
too-rare occurrence for me), and came away with a few observations.
Bear in mind that I was focused on the Engineers (and I'm certainly
not a hockey professional :-) so some (or all) of this may be total
garbage.
- This is the same team that lost to Army??? Even if they weren't
as good as the score Friday indicated, they played pretty
well. Saturday, they could have easily given up after falling
down by two goals early.
- A large majority of RPIs goals seemed to come on individual
efforts (ie, someone taking the puck at mid-ice and skating in
on the goalie). Very few goals seemed to come from organized
plays (setting up in the offensive zone and passing the puck
around).
- RPIs forwards seem to be very fast, and the team seems to be
small as compared to Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
- Brian Richardson can really handle the puck. He looks like he's
the go-to guy for this team.
- Mike Tamburro looked spectacular on Friday night (vs. Clarkson)
and wasn't as bad as the score indicated on Staurday (see next
point).
- The RPI defense consistently let opposing forwards skate to the
net. They did a good job clearing the slot during set plays,
but on breaks (both even and odd man), players were skating to
the crease (with the puck) unmolested.
- The Engineers seem to be quite determined not to be intimidated
by larger squads, and took a few un-necessary penalties while
trying to be extra physical.
