Maine and Northeastern both posted sweeps on the weekend, against BU and
Merrimack respectively. UNH took 3 of four points from BC, while
UMass-Lowell and Providence split their series, each winning in the
other's rink. Both of the high scorers on the weekend came from UNH,
as Rob Donovan and Nick Poole each racked up 3-4--7. Mike Murray of
UMass-Lowell had 0-6--6.
From the Sunday Boston Herald: Maine was 3-for-6 Saturday in their 6-3
win while holding BU to 1-for-10. Assistant coach Red Gendron devised
a new 1-4-1 forecheck system that helped Maine outplay BU in the rematch.
Quite a few scouts were on hand, mainly to watch Paul Kariya. (I've
heard people say that it already looks as if the 18-year-old is "too
good" for this level of play; he has 29 points in 9 games and is on pace
to break the all-time Division I single-season scoring record, which is
held by North Dakota's Tony Hrkac - 116 points in 48 games in 1986-87.)
When asked how good Maine can be, BU coach Jack Parker said, "I think
last year's Maine team was their best in a long while and one of the
best college teams ever." Hmm. A total of 38 penalties for 79 minutes
were called in the game, Maine had 21/44 and BU 17/35. The teams will
meet again Feb 19-20 in Orono. Parker said he will start third-string
sophomore goalie J.P. McKersie Tuesday against Harvard.
Next weekend, only NU and UNH will see league action as they meet on
Sat 11/28. The game will be shown a day later on NESN at 7 pm.
The other six HE teams will all be in nonleague action:
BC hosts SLU Friday and Clarkson Sunday afternoon.
BU hosts Harvard in a big game Tuesday, then travels to Princeton for a
game Saturday afternoon.
Maine will play in the round robin Great Alaska Face-off against Yale,
Bowling Green and Alaska-Fairbanks.
UMass-Lowell hosts Union Saturday and Vermont Sunday.
Merrimack travels to Air Force for games Friday and Saturday.
Providence travels to Cornell Saturday, then plays crosstown rival Brown
next Monday night in the Mayor's Cup Game. The game has been moved to
the Providence Civic Center from Brown's Meehan Auditorium.
