Gophers forwards Wyatt Smith, Mike Anderson and Reggie Berg are among
seven Minnesotans on the WCHA all-star team that will play in the Kolin
Cup hockey tournament in Zug, Switzerland, in late August.
The 22-member team, which is coached by Jeff Sauer of Wisconsin, also
includes Colorado College defenseman Scott Swanson of Cottage Grove;
Wisconsin defenseman Craig Anderson of Brooklyn Park; St. Cloud State
forward George Awada of Mendota Heights; and St. Cloud State forward
Jason Goulet of Warroad.
The team includes rising seniors from all WCHA schools and will face two
German teams and a Swiss team in the three-day tournament, which runs
from Aug. 21-23.
WCHA schools regularly schedule home games against visiting European
teams during the annual Christmas break in the league schedule. But this
is the first time the conference has sent an all-star team to Europe,
and commissioner Bruce McLeod said he hopes to make it an annual event.
***** WHO PAYS FOR THIS?!?!? THE PLAYERS? THE WCHA? THE INDIVIDUAL
SCHOOLS? *****
