Here is some information members of this list might want to know about. I
have heard a member of the US Forestry Service describe this beetle as a
threat to virtually every hardwood species in north america. The insect has
the potential to kill off, for example, every maple tree in New England and
Canada ... in less than a decade. The insect enters north america in wooden
packing material from which the bark has been incompletely removed--bark is
often not stripped from sections that are not visible to inspectors.
