We have just implemented a small new feature in NM (Network Management).
If you don't use NM, this does not apply to you.
We have added a new feature to NM that allows you to display some of the
history associated with a host in NM. When displaying a Host entry, you
will now see a "History" button near the bottom of the screen. Hitting
this button will show you all the entries in NM's logs referencing that
host by name. You will then be offered buttons to search on IP
addresses and MAC (hardware) addresses owned by this host and to display
the recent DHCP history associated with this host.
We will eventually add other history functions, but with the increased
use of roaming and automated IP address assignment we thought it
important to get this function in place.
A few notes:
* The NM logs go back to 1996 so in some cases you may get quite a
bit of output. We will probably eventually allow limiting the
output by date.
* Over time the format of the logs has changed somewhat and the
data included has varied.
* There have been occasional small losses of log data and so there
are some small holes in the history.
* In the recent DHCP history, we keep only the most recent unique
(Hardware address, IP address, Action, Server) tuple. This
means you will see the most recent DHCP activity, and if a host
has has other IP addresses and MAC addresses, some of the older
DHCP data.
* The DHCP history only goes back as far as 2000.
As always, comments and bug reports are welcomed.
