Cornell opened the 2004-05 season by hosting long-time foe Army, one of the
few opponents that owns a winning record against the Big Red. Cornell has
often had a lot of trouble with the Cadets when these two teams tangle, but
that was not the case tonight, as the Big Red struck early and often in a
7-1 rout. Chris Abbott and Jeremy Downs teamed up to get things started
just 2:19 into the opening period. Abbott's shot from deep in the right
circle was knocked aside by goalie Treye Kettwick, but the rebound floated
to the left side of the net, where a wide-open Downs flipped it home.

A couple of penalties put Cornell on a 5-on-3 power play, and the Big Red
lost little time in converting it. Freshman Sasha Pokulok, who got some
high praise from head coach Mike Schafer after last week's exhibition game
for some heavy shots he was able to fire through from the point, this time
let a little what-the-hell flip go from high in the slot that a screened
Kettwick never saw, and the Big Red was up 2-0 at the 3:31 mark. A couple
minutes later, the Cadets found themselves on their own 5-on-3, but Cornell
was able to keep them off the board, thanks in part to a brilliant save by
goaltender David McKee, who tracked a quick pass through the slot and
blocked the resulting shot from the right side.

Abbott pushed the lead to 3-0 with 1:57 remaining in the first. Mark
McCutcheon took a shot that Kettwick got a pad on, but the puck came loose
to his left, and Abbott was there to flick the rebound home. Matt Moulson
nearly had a fourth goal with 15 seconds left in the period when he caught
Kettwick out of position, but his shot slid off Kettwick's pad, rolled
along the goal line, and finally wound up to the side of the net. The Big
Red had a couple more chances to pad their lead in the second period, as
Ryan O'Byrne unleashed a rocket from high in the right circle that found
the left post at the three-minute mark, and a big flurry a few minutes
later ended with Shane Hynes lifting a shot over the goal.

Hynes did combine with Jon Gleed to get the only goal of the second period
at the 11:17 mark. Hynes deked to get Kettwick to sprawl on the ice, then
passed to Gleed near the slot for the flip into the open net. McKee ended
the second period having faced only six shots and stopping all of them, but
his shutout bid would last only 32 seconds into the third, when David
Andros skated between the circles and put the puck home through the five-hole.

Mitch Carefoot restored Cornell's four-goal lead at 4:07 of the third, as
he notched the Big Red's first short-handed goal since their NCAA
tournament game against Quinnipiac back in March of 2002. Gleed brought
the puck up the left side before finding Carefoot to the right of the net;
Carefoot hacked at the loose puck a couple times before getting it through.
At 10:47 of the third, McKee came out and freshman goaltender Troy
Davenport went between the pipes for Cornell.

Abbott got his second of the night at the 13:42 mark with a soft shot that
rolled under a diving Kettwick. Hynes rounded out the scoring at 15:57 of
the third, as he was able to poke the puck across the line during a
goalmouth scramble.

McKee finished with six saves, while Davenport picked up two in relief.
Kettwick was considerably busier, as he stopped 42 shots. Cornell hosts
another Atlantic Hockey foe Saturday night, taking on Sacred Heart.
