Tim Whitehead Named Coach Of The Year Finalist
Finalist for sixth time in his career

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine men's ice hockey head coach Tim
Whitehead has been named one of eleven finalists for the Spencer
Penrose Award, given annually to the NCAA Division One Coach of the
Year. This marks the sixth time that Whitehead has been a finalist for
the award, and he was recipient of the Spencer Penrose Award in 2002. 

Whitehead has led Maine to the NCAA Tournament in all six seasons as
head coach of the Black Bears. Overall, he has a 154-68-26 record at
Maine and a 230-163-37 career record in eleven seasons as a head coach.
While at Maine, he has reached the NCAA Frozen Four four times, the
National Championship game twice and won the 2004 Hockey East
Tournament Championship. 

To be a finalist for the award, a coach must be named a conference
coach of the year or lead his team to the Frozen Four. Other finalists
this season are: Dave Burkholder (Niagara), Rick Comley (Michigan
State), Dave Hakstol (North Dakota), Jeff Jackson (Notre Dame), Joe
Marsh (St. Lawrence), Bob Motzko (St. Cloud State), Brian Riley (Army),
Jamie Russell (Michigan Tech), Dick Umile (New Hampshire) and Jerry
York (Boston College). Whitehead was also a finalist for the award in
1997, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006. 

The Black Bears, 23-14-2 overall on the season, will face Michigan
State in the NCAA Frozen Four on Thursday, April 5 at 4:00 pm ET. It
marks the eleventh time the team has reached the Frozen Four and the
fourth time in the last six seasons under head coach Tim Whitehead. For
