In a game that will likely go down in the history of the UMaine women's
ice hockey program, Maine defeated #8 Northeastern 5-4 Saturday night at
Alfond arena.
It was Maine's first win ever against a top-10 team and against one of the
ECAC's longtime powers.
While one game does not make a program, each program has a series of
defining moments.. this is surely one of those for Rick Filighera's Maine
Black Bears. Congrats to the Black Bears on a great win!

MAINE DEFEATS NORTHEASTERN 5-4 IN WOMEN S ICE HOCKEY
ORONO, MAINE--The University of Maine women s ice hockey team defeated
Northeastern University 5-4 Saturday night at Alfond Arena in ECAC
play. With the win, Maine improves to 10-9-0, 5-8-0 in ECAC play, while
Northeastern falls to 11-7-0, 8-4-0 in conference play. For the Black
Bears, it was their first win ever over Northeastern, and the first win
ever over a top 10 team as Northeastern was ranked eighth in both the
latest USA Today and US College Hockey Polls.
UMaine scored four second period goal behind the effort of Andrea
Keller (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bethesda Christian), who tallied a
goal and an assist in the period, to pick up the victory. UMaine took
an early 1-0 lead when Karen Droog (Listowel, Ontario/Peel Storm)
registered her 16th goal of the season at 5:37 of the first period.
Northeastern proceeded to score three goals within 10 minutes to take a
3-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period the veterans led the way for Maine as Keller,
Raffi Wolf (Voerde, Germany/Gesamtschule am Lauerhaas) and Kelly Nelson
(South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS), all who have been with the team for
three years, each scored a goal in the period. Maine also received a
goal from rookie Meagan Aarts (Watford, Ontario/Bluewater Hawks) as it
scored four goal in a single period for just the second time all
season.
Northeastern came out strong in the third period and cut the Maine
lead to 5-4 when Kim Greene (Everett, Mass./Lawrence Academy) scored
her second goal of the game, but that was as close as the Huskies would
get. UMaine netminder Dawn Froats (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame
Hounds) played outstanding for Maine as she made 22 saves, 11 in the
third period, including several of the spectacular variety to ensure
the win for Maine. Froats improves to 8-2-0 on the season. Erika Silva
(Middletown, R.I./Providence Country Day) made 18 saves in net for
Northeastern, and falls to 11-6-0 on the season.
In the game, UMaine set the school record for home wins in a season
with eight. The Black Bears will not have long to savor the win as
Providence comes to the Alfond tomorrow (Sunday, January 21, 2001) for
a 3:00 p.m. battle. Providence is ranked ninth in the latest USA Today
Poll.
