Flames deal trio for Simon

By Phil Coffey | NHL.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Calgary Flames got bigger and tougher Saturday, acquiring forward
Chris Simon from the New York Rangers in exchange for three players,
including goaltender Jamie McLennan.

Despite the overall struggles with the Rangers this season, Simon was
one of the bright spots. He scored 14 goals, assisted on nine others
and was plus-14 in 65 games. He will be an unrestricted free agent at
the end of the season.

In addition to Simon, the Flames, challenging for a Stanley Cup Playoff
berth in the Western Conference, will receive a seventh-round selection
in the 2004 Entry Draft.

Broadway-bound are McLennan, who was 12-9-3 with a solid 2.20
goals-against average and .910 save percentage for the Flames this
season. Like Simon, the 32-year-old goalie will be an unrestricted free
agent at the end of the season. McLennan, familiar with the New York
area after starting his career with the Islanders, figured to become
the backup to Mike Dunham.

The Rangers also receive Blair Betts, 24, who scored a goal and
assisted on two others in 20 games with the Flames this season. Greg
Moore, 19, plays at the University of Maine. He scored nine goals and
seven assists in 33 games with the Black Bears this season and was
selected 143rd overall by the Flames in the 2003 Entry Draft.

The Rangers also claimed forward Josh Green off waivers from the
Flames. He had two goals and four assists in 36 games with Calgary this
season.

Simon joins an exodus of players from the disappointing Rangers.
Earlier, New York traded Alexei Kovalev to Montreal, Brian Leetch to
Toronto and Petr Nedved and Jussi Markkanen to Edmonton.
