This is a repost of an earlier message I sent that was kicked out for technical reasons...

Maine is still in that Northern tier of schools (Vermont, UNH, Michigan
Tech, Lake State, UMD, etc) where recruiting is very difficult. One of
the retrospective tapes from the '93 season was called "Out of the
Woods." It is a title that could be used by the other Northern tier
schools as well. Grant has found a way to lure great players to play in
the woods. Nonni is right. Lose Grant, lose a BIG part of the program
that will be extremely difficult to replace.

P.S. My spell checker suggested "UGH" as a replacement for "UNH."

I know this will probably sound like an uneducated comment, but that's
mainly because I don't know the process very well, and I don't know
Grant at
all.

However, my thought would be that a player would chose to come to Maine
for
certain reasons. The history and power of the program, the competition
that
they will play against (probably the best college competition in the
country), or the coach that he will get to play for. I agree that
losing
Standbrook will be hard for Maine, but the players don't come here to
play
for him, so I think it will be something that we can rebound from.
When
Walsh passed, the coach that many players wanted to play for was no
longer
there.

Excellent point Nonni.

I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say that the loss of
Standbrook,
whenever he does leave Maine, may be more devasting to the program than
Walsh's untimely passing.

I *LOVE* this recruiting class and this group of

players that Timmy has brought in.

Can't agree with you more, but let's not ever forget the impact that
Grant Standbrook has made both to the groups that "Shawn brought in"
and "Timmy has brought in." The man has no equal in seeing potential
in youngsters and watching that potential develop -- he has been and
is as important to Maine Hockey as any conversation we can have about
any head coach, too.
His
contributions to all those banners is so often overlooked ...
