UNH was offside just seconds before the goal. The UNH player heading
for the puck realized the (delayed) offside and turned back away from
the puck (and maybe headed to the bench?). It seemed to fool the camera
operator (into thinking there was a whistle). S/he finally realized
they were still playing and rather quickly panned down to the UNH
defensive zone on Lawson, but from a distance. The puck then appeared
in the back of the net. Seconds later Fox showed a second angle (ice
level, with Lawson skating toward the camera) and maybe third angle
(Nault(?) coming down his left side of the rink and shooting the puck
just in front of Ayers and at Lawson).

Slow motion replay showed (IMHO conclusively) that Lawson's skate
deflected the goal past Ayers. IMHO, it was fairly conclusive that the
deflection was intentional and probable that the puck was deflected, not
kicked in. I think my understanding of the rules is the same as Dave's:
in the NHL it should have counted; in college hockey it should not have
counted.

(A goal shall not be awarded ...) If the puck has been kicked, thrown
or otherwise deliberately directed into the goal by any means other
   than a stick;

(Counter-indication: in a post game interview Lawson did NOT admit to
kicking or intentionally deflecting the puck in ... suggesting it just
happened. Were that the case, the officials were correct in awarding
the goal!)

Fwiw, instant replay is allowed for tournament games only (regular
season and post season). Were instant replay in effect, this play would
have been reviewable under college hockey rules, and the goal (IMHO)
would have been overturned.

On another front, the box score included

   (partial) Scoring Summary:
First Period: ME-2 Tom Reimann 4 (Shields) 19:53
Overtime: ME-3 Lucas Lawson 15 (Nault, Reimann) 4:53

Looks to me as if UNH needs to tighten up the defense with 7 seconds
remaining on the clock! ;-)

A couple of pretty good college hockey teams, eh? :-)
