TIM WHITEHEAD NAMED FINALIST FOR COACH OF YEAR

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine men’s ice hockey head coach Tim
Whitehead has been named by the American Hockey Coaches Association a
finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top NCAA
Division One Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. Whitehead received the
Spencer Penrose Award following the 2001-02 season in which the Black
Bears advanced to the National Championship game.

Other finalists this year are: Enrico Blasi (Miami), George Gwozdecky
(Denver), Stan Moore (Colgate), Paul Pearl (Holy Cross), Scott Sandelin
(Minnesota-Duluth), Tom Serratore (Bemidji State) and Jerry York (Boston
College). To be a finalist, a coach must be voted Coach of the Year by a
conference or take a team to the Frozen Four.

The award is named in honor of the former Colorado Springs benefactor who
built the Broadmoor Hotel Complex, site of the first ten NCAA Hockey
Championships. It will be presented at the American Hockey Coaches
Association (AHCA) Coach of the Year Banquet on Saturday, April 24, in
Naples, Florida.
