SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team
defeated Union 8-1 on Friday night at Achilles Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. The
Black Bears improve to 6-7-3 on the season, while Union falls to 3-9-1. The
eight goals that Maine scored were the most since the Black Bears scored
nine against Quinnipiac on Feb. 8, 2003. Maine outshot Union 66-11 in the
game.

Maine opened the scoring early in the first period when Sonia Corriveau
(Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) notched her sixth goal of the season from Brigitte
Laflamme (St. Augustine, Quebec) and Emily Stevens (Hamilton, Ontario) at
1:42. Meagan Aarts (Watford, Ontario) added to the Maine lead midway through
the first period when she teamed up with Karen Droog (Listowel, Ontario) and
Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario) at 9:45. Maine finished with a 12-2
advantage in shots in the frame.

Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) notched her second goal of the
season at 9:24 of the second period from Tristan Desmet (Strathmore,
Alberta) and Naomi Smethurst (Hay River, Northwest Territories).

Union scored its lone goal of the game at 14:52 of the second period when
Courtney Riepenhoff beat UMaine netminder Amy Rodgers (Dartmouth, Nova
Scotia), who was making her collegiate debut.

Maine regained the three goal lead less than two minutes later when Carolyn
Faust (Buffalo, N.Y.) notched her first collegiate goal in her first
collegiate game from Morgan Janusc (Dundas, Ontario).

Laflamme scored the first of Maine's four third period goals. She notched
her first collegiate tally at 2:28 from Andrea Steranko (Regina,
Saskatchewan) and Kelly Law (Markham, Ontario). Corriveau added her second
of the game and fourth in the past three games at 8:55 when she beat
Dutchwomen netminder Lauren Carlson. Laflamme and Laura Maddin (Surrey,
British Columbia) assisted on the Maine tally. Janusc notched her first
career goal at 10:57 from Aarts. Rookie Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario)
rounded out the scoring for Maine at 17:56 with her fifth of the year from
Droog and Aarts.

Fourteen different players registered at least a point in the game for
Maine. The Black Bears recorded 29 shots on goal in the second period and 25
in the third, while limiting the Dutchwomen to just two shots in the first
and third periods. Maine was 0-3 on the power play while Union was 0-6.

Amy Rodgers saw her first collegiate action as she started in goal for the
Black Bears. She made nine saves in 49:39 minutes of play, picking up her
first win. Freshman Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, N.Y.) played the final
10:21 and stopped one shots for the Black Bears. Carlson made 58 saves in
goal for Union.

The two teams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 13 when they face each
