MTU LOSES HEARTBREAKER IN OVERTIME; GAME AN ENTERTAINING ONE
Houghton, Mich. -- Joe Cullen scored at 3:38 of overtime as St. Cloud
State handed Michigan Tech a heart-breaking 4-3 defeat Friday night
in WCHA action at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton.
After a scoreless first period, the ninth-ranked Huskies of SCSU got
goals from Mark Hartigan and Jon Cullen in the first 5:12 of the
second stanza to take a 2-0 lead. Tech fought back with a power play
goal by Paul Cabana at 8:15, but Andy Lundbohm scored from the goal
line at 11:52 as SCSU re-took a two-goal lead. MTU again fought back
as Cabana chipped one home off a rebound in front at 14:58 and
Michigan Tech trailed by just a goal after two periods.
Tech would even the game at 3-3 on a perfect shot by Chris Durno from
the left faceoff circle just 1:25 into the third period. MTU had
several terrific chances to win the game in regulation, including a
shot on the power play by Brad Patterson that SCSU netminder Scott
Meyer made an incredible toe save on.
Cullen's game winner came between the circles and beat Tech netminder
Brian Rogers over the left shoulder as SCSU had MTU chasing around in
its own end.
Meyer had 34 saves in the win. Rogers made 35 stops in the loss.
Cabana, with two goals, was named MTU's Superior Player of the Game.
The two teams meet again Saturday (Dec. 2) at 7:05 p.m. to conclude
the two-game series.
Note: The game was the first home contest for new MTU coach Mike Sertich.
